(12/29/2014) Update: You actually don't have to go through all that trouble. I just reinstalled Night Watch, patched it, used the no cd exe, and I used the d3d9.dll file that comes with the Silent Storm unofficial patch.

Get the Silent Storm unofficial patch and copy the d3d9.dll file into the run folder, and run the game. Sorry if this update is rather late.

Here's the link to the unofficial patch

Note: The graphics are actually a bit better than what you're seeing. I only set the lighting quality low, because the outline on the characters looked black for some reason when the lighting set higher than low.

I consider this obscure, because at the time it got released, it had a little bit of recognition in America, but over time, it faded into obscurity. I'm sure it got decent recognition in Russia since the game is based off of the movie and novel of the same name in Russia.

I think this is a rather enjoyable game, but this is one of those games where it's not for everyone.

It was developed by Nival Interactive, the same company that made the Silent Storm series, Hammer & Sickle, Blitzkrieg, and a couple of other games. They also made a sequel to the game, Day Watch, which is based off of the book and movie of the same name. Strangely, there was no word of a sequel to the first game released until I found out that the game was released as a digital download on GamersGate.

Wall of text ahead, read on if you want to. :P

If you plan on buying it, you can only buy a physical copy of it from Amazon, or Ebay. Here are some things you need to know also.

If you have a graphics card that's far too advanced for this game(like with Silent Storm, since the game is using the same engine from Silent Storm) you need to download these two files: d3d9.dll and kernal32.dll, and put them in the Run folder of the game.

The only downside is that you can't adjust the video settings, because it will crash the game when you try and change them. The only way to change them is by going to Run, cfg, and open nwconfig.cfg with notepad and adjust the video settings there. If it's not there, create a profile in the game.

If you have an old graphics card, you should be able to run the game with no problem.

If you have more than 2 or 3 gigabytes of memory, you have to go to msconfig by pressing windows key+R and type in "msconfig"(without quotation marks). Once it's open, go to Boot, Advanced Options, turn on Maximum Memory, and type in 2048. Reboot your computer, and it will set your memory around 2 gigabytes.

If you have 4 gigabytes, or less, you should be able to run the game as well.

If you have Windows 7, make sure compatibility mode is Windows XP Service Pack 3(or 2) and turn on "Run as administrator(just in case) and go to Control Panel, System and Security, System, Advanced System Settings, Performance, and Data Execution Prevention(DEP).

Click on "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select". Click "Add" and look for the location of the game, and add it to the list of exceptions, and click apply.

Before you start the game, get the patch for it(it's not a important patch, but it's still better than having the game left unpatched imo. That, and it's required for this part) here http://www.fileplanet.com/165507/160000/fileinfo/Night-Watch-Patch

Go to gamecopyworld and look for Night Watch. Download "Night Watch v1.01 [ENGLISH] No-CD/Fixed EXE". Open it with Winrar, and overwrite the the game's executable file. This will help bypass the copy protection crap, because it isn't compatible with current Operating Systems.

If you have Windows 8, repeat the steps I've said, except don't use compatibility mode. Instead, go to the bottom left corner and right click on it. Then, click on "Command Prompt (Admin). Once it's open, copy and paste this command:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

and press enter. Restart your computer, and DEP will be turned off. If you want to turn it on, copy and paste this command:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn

It's a bit of a pain, I know, but it'll be worth it in the end.

If you want to set your memory back the way it was if you plan on playing the game later, just go back to msconifg and uncheck Maximum Memory, and restart your computer. Your memory will be back the way it was.
