The MSI GeForce RTX 5060 Gaming OC is a new entry-level graphics card priced at $330, with a focus on providing a strong 1080p gaming experience. The card is based on NVIDIA's new Blackwell architecture and uses the GB206 graphics processor with 3,840 cores, 8 GB of GDDR7 VRAM on a 128-bit bus, and a PCI-Express 5.0 x8 interface. The MSI model features a factory overclock, a robust cooling solution that delivers excellent temperatures and quiet operation, a metal backplate, and idle fan-stop functionality. This premium version offers a 2-3% performance increase over the base model, with the potential for a significant 15% performance boost through manual overclocking.
In terms of performance, the RTX 5060 delivers a notable generational improvement, matching the rasterization performance of the last-generation RTX 4060 Ti at 1080p. This makes it approximately 26% faster than the standard RTX 4060. However, the card's 8 GB VRAM is a major bottleneck in modern AAA titles, particularly when ray tracing is enabled or at higher resolutions. In VRAM-constrained scenarios, games can suffer from performance hits or even crash, especially those built on the Vulkan API. The card's effective gaming resolution is therefore limited to 1080p, with careful settings adjustments required to prevent VRAM overutilization.
The RTX 5060's primary strength lies in its support for DLSS 4. The new "Transformer" upscaling model provides a significant jump in image quality, making upscaled images look nearly identical to native resolution, and is a major advantage over competing cards. The DLSS 4 multi-frame generation feature can also be used to achieve very high framerates, though it requires a base framerate of at least 40-50 FPS to avoid noticeable input latency. Both of these technologies are essential for achieving an optimal gaming experience in demanding titles without having to resort to low graphical settings, but Frame Generation does increase VRAM usage by about 1 GB.
When considering value, the MSI RTX 5060 Gaming OC’s $30 premium over the MSRP positions it close to the entry-level RTX 5060 Ti and AMD's RX 9060 XT. While the card's performance and DLSS capabilities are a strong selling point, the 8 GB VRAM remains a key limitation that requires the user to be proactive with game settings. For those on a tighter budget, the last-generation RTX 4060 is noted as a viable alternative, as it still supports the high-quality DLSS Transformer model. Ultimately, the RTX 5060 is a solid choice for 1080p gaming, provided the user is willing to engage with game settings and leverage its DLSS capabilities.
