October 27, 2024 - Spooky-themed Game Demos
This week I tried the demos for Fleshinsane, Crow Country, Little Goody Two Shoes, and Soul Mates.
Fleshinsane is a roguelite with a biopunk setting in which you play as an "Inquisitor" who has lost his squad and died himself, somehow being resurrected, with the goal of fighting through the ship you're on to escape. It's pretty hard, and some things aren't really explained, but seems like it has a solid base to work with. It could be good with some more work.
Crow Country is a survival horror game with similarities to games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, and PS1 style graphics/gameplay. You play as some kind of agent whose name I don't remember ;) and have to fight your way through a rundown amusement park to find its owner, who has seemingly disappeared. The combat is a bit painful (at least at the start), but it's got some good puzzles.
Little Goody Two Shoes is an RPG maker style game with a "phantasmagorical horror narrative" in which you play as a girl named Elise as she does chores for the villagers, builds relationships, avoids suspicion of being the "witch" plaguing the town, and tries to keep her sanity as all sorts of strange things happen around her. The demo seems well made all around, with a well written story, a lovely 90-s hand-painted anime style, and some lovely and chilling music. It's also a prequel to a game called "Pocket Mirror".
Soul Mates is a bit of a silly game that reminds me a bit of the Sucker for Love games. It's a "point-and-click survival horror dating sim". You play as a guy looking for your friend, Erica, who was exploring a haunted mansion and never came back. As you explore the mansion looking for her, you have to survive encounters with paranormal entities, give them gifts to satisfy them, and rizz them up. I had quite a giggle.
