Now, this one I decided to look up on the Okami Wiki because I had no clue if the canine warriors were actually based on something, but according to the wiki, they are based on a fictional book called "Nansō Satomi Hakkenden". The title has been translated as The Eight Dog Chronicles, Tale of Eight Dogs, or Biographies of Eight Dogs. Now, they aren't actually dogs- as far as I can tell- but their names all have something to do with "inu" the Japanese word for dog, and that's why they're known as the "eight dogs" (Which is probably why the game made these dudes into actual dogs- it's another pun). Princess Fuse is also in this book- she is also a human. The canine warriors of Okami and these 8 "dog warriors" are pretty much exactly the same other than the Okami version being literal dogs while the book version are humans.

Each canine warrior's name (Rei, Shin, Chi, Ko, Tei, Gi, Jin, and Chu) corresponds to a virtue of Confucianism (basically a belief/value system of some sort). The virtues are the same as the ones in game- so Rei = honor, Shin = Faith, and so on.
