Okami Part 5: One "E" Away From Being A Problem
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Anyway, lore for today:
This is another one that I had to look up. Apparently, Mr. and Mrs. Cutter (and also the Sparrows and their inn) are based on the Shita-kiri Suzume (Tongue-cut sparrow). It's a fable about an old man and his wife and a little injured sparrow. The old man found an injured bird in the woods and brought it home to care for it. The old woman was upset with her husband for wasting food on a bird.
One day, the man left her in charge of the bird for the day. The old woman didn't feed it and it ended up eating all her starch after she left it alone all day. When the woman found out all her starch was gone, she cut off the sparrow's tongue and threw it back into the mountains.
The old man went searching for the bird and found a bunch of them along with their inn. He was given food and some sparrows danced for him. Then when he left, he was allowed to take either a small gift basket with him or a large one. He chose the small one because it'd be easier to take home. When he returned home and showed his wife the basket, they opened it and found that it was full of treasure. The wife, upon learning that there was a larger basket, ran off into the sparrow inn to get it. She was given the larger basket and told not to open it. She leaves and opens the basket. It is filled with a bunch of snakes. The snakes startle her so badly that she tumbles down the mountain to her death. The end.
