Old School RuneScape Interview - Keeping The Lore Together Between Several RuneScape Games
Interview with Mat Kemp – Product Manager, Old School RuneScape, at RuneScape 15 years anniversary.
How do you do develop and grow the Old School, create add ons and still keep the lore together between different RuneScape versions?
The we have one overriding maxim that we work to in the team, and that is if we wouldn't have done it in 2007, we won't do it now. Which means every decision we make, we think, you know, as Jagex in the game was back in 2007, is that a realistic thing we would have done? Doesn't mean that we have to do exactly the same content we did in 2007, but we have to make the same sort of decisions.
Old School RuneScape is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), developed and published by Jagex. The game was released on 16 February 2013. When Old School RuneScape launched, it began as an August 2007 version of the game RuneScape, which was highly popular prior to the launch of RuneScape 3. The game has since received engine improvements, new content, and quality of life updates largely decided by the community via in-game polls. Old School RuneScape is now the more popular version of the game

“When I made this game, I thought it was just like any other – it would go online, a few people could play it, and then that would be it. I certainly didn’t expect it to be running 15 years later and still be being developed 15 years later.” Andrew Gower, co-creator of RuneScape
“The sense of exploration and discovery is far more powerful in a game like RuneScape than most any other MMO” Richard Garriott, creator and producer of Ultima Online (1997).
January 2001 marked the arrival of RuneScape’s first incarnation, designed and developed by brothers Andrew Gower, Ian Gower and Paul Gower.Initial Popularity and Early Struggles
Ian Gower: “It [RuneScape] was far more popular than we could possibly have imagined. Initially, we only had one game world and that filled up very quickly.”
Andrew Gower: “In 2004, we decided to start making a new version called RuneScape 2, a total rewrite of the code base and an upgrade of the graphics. But we were desperately worried that if we upgraded the version of the game, we could lose a lot of players. So we thought we’ll just keepthe old version of the game online, just in case.”
Mat Kemp, Product Manager, OSRS: “When Old School RuneScape first came out most people looked at it and thought ‘This is gonna be a flash in the pan’, people are going to get gonna get their bit of nostalgia and are going to leave. Three years later, the game is huge.”
Phil Mansell, VP of RuneScape: When I think back to all the different eras of RuneScape I can see something timeless, something that’s really special, that no other game has, and that’s what makes me really confident that RuneScape’s going to be around for a hell of a long time yet.”
