The shadow was amateur criminologist Lamont Cranston. He had learned “the hypnotic power to cloud men’s minds so that they cannot see him”. The opening to the show, “Who knows … what evil … lllllurks … in the heart of men? … The Shadow knows! His “friend and companion, the lovely Margo Lane, is the only person who knows to whom the voice of the invisible Shadow belongs”. Together they confront the maddest assortment of lunatics, sadists, ghosts and werewolves ever heard on the air. In this episode:

Lamont Cranston and Margo were looking at a painting in the art gallery done by Albert Gerner. Gerner had died four years ago. He was actually a chemist who had loved to paint. When he was young he married Diane Morrow. Fifteen years ago she was one of the most beautiful young actors on the stage. Gerner was madly in love with her and was painting her in a beautiful black dress when he left the room to talk to a servant. They heard a shot from Diane’s room and discovered that she had killed herself leaving Gerner completely broken. Now the Shadow finds himself investigating the murder of Norman Brice the theatrical producer who appears to have commit suicide and who had worked with Diane Morrow all those years ago.
