On this day, a feline pioneer became the first of her kind to enter the final frontier. On October 18, 1963, a stray cat from the streets of Paris named Félicette became the first cat in space. Following efforts by the United States and Soviet Union that sent animals into orbit, France’s space program decided to follow suit by launching a cat into space. On the morning of October 18th, Félicette was selected as the most suitable of France’s 14 cat candidates, and she was loaded into the nose of a Véronique AGI 47 rocket and blasted into space. Félicette experienced 5 minutes of weightlessness before returning safely to Earth, providing the French with valuable data for use in later manned space flights. Sadly, Félicette was killed two months later so her brain could be studied, but she will live on forever as a kitty cat space pioneer!
