ONE MINUTE HISTORY - October 13, 2022
On this day, thousands of devout believers gathered together and witnessed something miraculous. On October 13, 1917, at least 30,000 people congregated near the Portuguese village of Fatima. They then turned their eyes skyward and witnessed a phenomenon that has since come to be known as the Miracle of the Sun. The pilgrims had been drawn to the small village by the prophecies of three local shepherd children who claimed that the Virgin Mary would descend from heaven and perform miracles on October 13th. On the appointed day, the faithful gathered and watched as the sun appeared to change into a rainbow of different colors and dance across the sky. While skeptics have suggested many natural explanations for this occurrence including mass hysteria and an optical illusion called a sun dog, the Vatican claims the Miracle of the Sun was supernatural, and it remains one of history’s most famous and controversial miracles.
