On this day, a world-famous festival was held for the first time. On October 12, 1810, the citizens of Munich celebrated the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen with a raucous festival in a meadow outside of town that featured a parade, horse racing, and lots of food and beer. The festival went over so well that the people decided to do it again next year, and thus Oktoberfest was born. The festival has steadily evolved over the years: the late 19th century saw the traditional beer booths replaced with the beer halls that are known today, while the horse race was discontinued in 1960. The start date has also steadily crept back to take advantage of warmer weather to the point that Oktoberfest now begins in September. Today, Oktoberfest attracts over six million visitors per year and has inspired copycat festivals all over the world.
