On this day, a band of brothers used clever tactics to defeat a much larger army. On October 25, 1415, an English army commanded by King Henry V defeated a French army at the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years’ War. On paper, the battle appeared to be a serious mismatch in favor of the French – they not only outnumbered the English, but their force consisted of an impressive collection of elite knights including many of the great lords of the realm, while the majority of the English force was composed of foot soldiers armed with longbows. However, the muddy terrain heavily favored the English, who were also able to shelter their archers in the woods on either side of the battlefield and deploy sharpened wooden stakes to ward off cavalry charges. The French knights advanced recklessly and became bogged down in the mud where they were annihilated by a rain of arrows from the English, proving the deadly power of the longbow on the medieval battlefield.
