On this day, a crisis arose in the Middle East that ended up revealing the order of the modern world. On October 29, 1956, Israel invaded Egypt’s Sinai peninsula with the support of France and Britain, who both wished to retake control of the Suez Canal from Egypt. The world’s reaction to this act of imperialism was extremely negative, and both the United States and the Soviet Union applied serious diplomatic pressure to force the attackers to withdraw from Egypt. American President Eisenhower threatened to destroy the British financial system by selling off America’s stockpile of pound sterling bonds, while the Soviets threatened a military attack which might have sparked World War III. In the end, the British and French folded under the pressure, proving that they were no longer the great imperial powers that they once were and confirming that the United States and the Soviet Union were the world’s true superpowers.
