On this day, one of the most daring prison escapes ever took place. On October 31, 1973, three members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army escaped from Mountjoy Prison in Dublin when their accomplices stole a helicopter, landed it in the prison yard, and took off with them. In order to free their compatriots, IRA members rented a helicopter and had the pilot fly to a distant field where gunmen were waiting to ambush him. The gunmen entered the helicopter, held the pilot at gunpoint, and forced him to fly to Mountjoy Prison. The guards initially took no action when the helicopter landed in the yard because they believed it contained the Irish Minister of Defense, who frequently made unannounced visits using a helicopter. Three high-ranking IRA members boarded the helicopter and escaped, prompting a massive nationwide manhunt that failed to recapture the most important escapee, Seamus Twomey, for over four years.
