One Piece: Grand Adventure Game Sample - GameCube
One Piece Grand Adventure is the follow-up to One Piece: Grand Battle and based on the popular "One Piece" anime and manga, and was released for PS2 and GameCube. Unlike the previous game, this game was not released in Japan and was meant to redeem the removed content from the International release of OPGB (known as One Piece Grand Battle! Rush in Japan). However, more than simply adding the additional characters from Grand Battle! Rush, it is a significant update with 24 main characters, 51 support characters, various mini-games, character costumes, treasures, galleries, extra modes, and an expanded new Adventure Mode where you travel the seven seas and build up characters from the OP universe (a rudimentary version of what you'd expect in the DBZ:Budokai or Tenkaichi series). With these additions, it proved to even surpass Grand Battle Rush! and made it one of the most enjoyable OP fighting games to date.
For a vague description of what the game is like, it's kinda like Power Stone, but lighter. Characters run around freely and smack each other around with basic attack combinations while collecting various items that can turn the tide of battle. They can also execute super special attacks by collecting coins. Much of the attacks remain unchanged from OPGB, but there are a few changes to the mechanics. Characters like Luffy can now use his "Gear" powers (which he gained significantly later in the series) and others can power up for the cost of a special gauge (which can further be enhanced by repeating the action).
Ultimate attacks are now harder to pull off, as they were way too easy and powerful in the original game. Besides pressing a series of buttons to activate the attack, you now have to press one of three buttons to align the attack to "Wisdom", "Strength", or "Technique". Your opponent can also input one of those three commands, and you have a 2/3 chane of success as every command has a weakness. The computer becomes more "psychic" regarding ultimate attacks on higher difficulties. This is generally a very easy game compared to other brawlers out there and is a great game for fans of the franchise and fighting game newcomers.
This is a video of the game in action, showing a little of Adventure Mode (where moves are limited until you go up in levels) and a battle in Versus Mode (where characters have access to all moves, good for showing the action in more detail). Enjoy.
