My family has for the longest time been big on Linux. I remember around 2005 or 2006, they became ubuntu users. Every time my folks get a new computer, off goes windows, and on goes linux. I was playing around with Linux on their computer one day, seeing if any games were available, and I discovered Open Arena. When I played it for the first time, I remember thinking, wait a minute, this is Quake III. I wasn't quite sure if it was legal, but sure enough, Open Arena is a free Quake III re-skin that came about when Id Software released the Quake III engine under the GPL, General Public License which according to wikipedia “is a series of widely used free software licenses that guarantee end users the four freedoms to run, study, share, and modify the software.”

What this means is Open Arena is essentially the exact same game as Quake III with re-skinned characters, weapons, and different maps. It is also completely legal to download and play. Even the Quake III Arena Mod db page has free source ports of Open arena you can download and play. You can go to the official site to download the original version, or you can go to Mod DB.

If you have never played Quake III, but have always wanted to try it, or maybe you owned it back in the day, and want to experience it again, Open Arena is an excellent way for newbies, and oldbies to experience the same fantastic gameplay and design of Quake III. You can play it online (there are still plenty of servers though a lot of them have bots in them), you can play it offline against bots in bot deathmatch, or you can play the single player.

If you were too young to have played Quake III, but have heard of the legends of this game from the old-timers, download Open Arena first, and if you like it, buy Quake III, or Quake Live off of Steam or GoG to get the original.

If you're not familiar with Quake III, in 1999, both Epic Megagames, and id Software were thinking the same thing. Quake, Quake II, and Unreal all had in-depth single player campaigns, with insanely popular fast, furious online deathwatch gameplay. The online play was so popular, it seems as if both developers were like, why even bother with the single player mode? Unreal already had bot deathmatches, so Epic took their already established formula, and added new maps, new weapons, a single player that was just bot deathmatches to train you for multiplayer, an announcer, and headshot, releasing Unreal Tournament on November 30th 1999.

Id Software designed a completely new game engine in the two years since Quake II, created new maps, created a few new weapons, programmed bot ai, added a single player that was just bot deathmatches to train you for multiplayer, and an announcer, releasing Quake III Arena just two days after Unreal Tourament on December 2nd 1999. The arena shooter was born, and both these games are still amazing to play to this day.

If you've never played Quake III, this is a fast paced, frenetic, shooter that its tons of chaotic fun. The sheer carnage, fast movement, and quick reflexes required make the game a blast to play offline, or online. Think of something akin to the more arcadey feel of Halo, except two to five times faster in nature, and you have a, well, poor idea of what Quake III is. Sad to say, Halo is the closest modern example I can think of off the top of my head that even comes close to Quake.

Quake III is just classic fun, and Open Arena is too. Honestly, if you're a PC gamer, either of the younger generation who don't remember Quake III, or maybe you weren't a PC gamer at the time, but are now, Quake III is just one of those games I think every gamer should play at least once in their life. Even if you never take it online, bot deathmatches provide endless fun.

Both Quake III and Open Arena are incredibly fun to play. If you've never played Quake III, but have always wanted to, download Open Arena, it's free, and it works on windows, Linux, and mac OS. If you're a hardcore Quake III fan, download Open Arena. It's a change of pace, AND it's free. Not only is it free, but should run one even the oldest of rigs out there. You can run it on a potato, but probably not a pregnancy test. You might have to upgrade your rig if that's what you're running.
