In the TV and monitor world 4k resolution screens have been available for quite some time and are now available at all budget levels. That hasn’t been the case for projectors, where up until 2017 if you wanted 4k you needed to spend over £5000 to get it. That has just changed! ……With the release of Texas Instruments’ new DLP chip technology there are several manufacturers launching affordable projectors.
At first glance of the specs you would think that there would be pretty much no difference between these two projectors. Both sport a bright 3000 lumens with a 1 million to 1 contrast ratio. They have the same lamp life at 4000 hours, that’s an hour a day for over 10 years, aswell as the same throw ratio and vertical lens shift option too. Beyond the basics the Optoma is quieter than the Acer both on paper and in practical usage, although it is larger and heavier so it’s obvious the cooling solution accounts for some of this difference. If you intend to move your projector about regularly, or just want get it out for occasions, then the Acer makes the better choice. Its smaller, lighter and comes with a carry bag where you can store any required cables.
In our testing the Optoma had slightly louder speakers even though they are 1 watt less, but in both cases the speakers are really only meant for presentations or occasional use. You will want a dedicated sound setup for movies, games or sports viewing.
In terms of real world usage both projectors produce an excellent picture with more than sufficient brightness for use in any room that isn’t in direct sunlight.
There is NO way to show in this video how 4k content really comes ALIVE when viewed on a screen big enough that you can REALLY see the detail. The clarity is simply stunning and is a huge leap up from viewing on even a large TV screen. As for HDR there is a noticeable difference between it being on or off, but this is one place where TV’s do a better job due to their superior brightness. Obviously our test setup wasn’t the ideal environment to show HDR content. The darker you can make the room the better a projector will perform so if you are dedicated to getting the best performance making your room darker and less reflective is something worth investing in.
Both projectors are also good for gaming on. If you are used to playing on a PC with a fast gaming monitor then you may notice some slight input lag in games with fast mouse movements. We didn’t notice any real difference to the average 4k TV though so if you are playing on a console or on less competitive games that don’t require lightning fast response times then you shouldn’t notice any issues. If Gaming IS your thing then the Optoma is the better option. It has a noticeably faster response time in its ‘GAME MODE’ over the Acer.
In terms of connectivity both projectors cover pretty much everything you might need. The only slight disappointment on both models is that only one of the HDMI ports is compatible with the UHD 4k and HDR standard. This means that if you have more than one 4k device to connect you will have to swap the cables around each time you wish to change devices.
Another note, for those who aren’t going through a sound system with an HDMI pass through option, is that you will need extra wires for your audio. HDMI’s connected to the projector will output through the built in speakers unless you connect an audio out cable. In this case the Optoma also includes an optical connector so you can output surround sound should you need to. Otherwise stereo is your only option.
Both projectors have an easy to use menu system and general setup is the same too with just a few cables. You have 15 degrees of vertical only lens-shift, this allows you to line up your picture even if your projector isn’t quite lined up with your projection surface or the height is slightly out. You can’t do this horizontally though so if you are ceiling mounting either of these projectors you need to make sure you measure accurately or buy a mount that allows some adjustability. There is also a 1.6x optical zoom on both models allowing some adjustment in picture size vs projection distance to allow you to fill your screen exactly once your projector is positioned or mounted.
