I guess you don't HAVE to grind this early, but I like to keep on top of my abilities, and having my mage actually be able to attack is helpful. Of course, now that I have these levels and abilities, the rest of the game shouldn't be too difficult. But of course, I might grind some more just to get more items.

Also, still no use for Alchemy per say. Why use it when you can sell stuff for lots of money and buy other things?
