Ranking and Sequence is based on arrangement of persons/objects in a particular order based on some specific characteristics.
Ranking Test:
In this type of questions, generally the ranks of a person both from the top and from the bottom are mentioned and the total number of persons is asked. However, sometimes this question is put in the form of a puzzle of interchanging seats by two persons.
Example 1: Raayan ranks fifteenth from the top and twenty - nine from the bottom in a class. How many students are there in the class?
Solution. Clearly, 14 students who have rank higher than Raayan and 28 students who have ranks lower than Raayan. i.e. (14+1+28) = 43 students.
Example 2: In a row of students, Kyara is 5th from the left and Puja is 6th from the right. If they interchange their positions, then Kyara becomes 13th from left. What will be Puja’s position from the right?
Solution. Kyara’s new position in 13th from left. But it is the same as Puja’s earlier position which is 6th from the right. Thus, the row consists of (12+1+5)18 students Now, Puja’s new positions is Kyara’s earlier position which is 5th from the left. Number of girls to the right of Puja’s (18–5)=13 So, Puja’s new position is 14th from the right.
Time sequence Test.:
This is designed to test a candidate’s ability in understanding ‘time sequences’.
Example 3: Sam remembers that his brothers birthday is after 15th but before 18th of March where as his Sister Kyara remembers that her brother’s birthday is after 16th but before 19th of March. on which day in March in Sam’s brothers birthday?
Solution. According to Sam, the brother birthday is on of the day among 16th and 17th March. According to sam sister his brother birthday is on of the day17th and 18th March. Clearly, Sam’s brother’s birthday is on the day common to both the above groups i.e. 17th March.
