Fraction comes from Latin word ‘fractus’ i.e "broken" which represents a part of a whole or, more generally, any number of equal parts.
When spoken in everyday English, a fraction describes how many parts of a certain size there are, for example, one-half, eight-fifths, three-quarters.
So,When any unit of a thing is divided into equal parts and some parts are considered, then it is called a fraction.
Fractions represent equal parts of a whole or a collection. Fraction of a whole: When we divide a whole into equal parts, each part is a fraction of the whole. Fraction of a collection: Fractions also represent parts of a set or collection.
Important Points about fractions
1. Every natural number can be expressed as a fraction.
2. Every mixed fraction can be expressed as an improper fraction and vice-versa.
3. If we multiply or divide the numerator and the denominator by the same non-zero number, the value of fraction remains unchanged.
4. When the Numerator and Denominator of a fraction are coprime, it is said to be in the reduced or simplest form.
5. To convert a complex fraction to simple fraction, treat the longest fraction line as representing division.
6. The reciprocal of a fraction is another fraction with the numerator and denominator exchanged. The product of a fraction and its reciprocal is 1, hence the reciprocal is the multiplicative inverse of a fraction. Any integer can be written as a fraction with the number one as denominator. Every fraction of an integer except for zero has its reciprocal.
7. To convert a compound friction to simple fraction, just carry out the multiplication.
