Ornatrix 3ds Max | Customize the viewport for ease of use.
In Ornatrix 3ds Max you can improve your viewport for work and in this video I will show how =)
In this video we will speak about how to change hair and guides width, hair shader for viewport, viewport quality, ambient occlusion and etc.

TIMING:
0:00 - Create a standard fur ball and immediately see the default hair thickness. It is not suitable for working in the Viewport.
0:07 - And immediately the first question from a subscriber - how do you change it?
0:14 - We go to Modifiers and select ChangeWidth.
0:18 - Notice the Width parameter. It is responsible for the thickness of the hair in the viewport and on the render.
0:24 - Turn off the modifiers because we need to learn how to change the thickness of guides in Edit Guides (second question from a subscriber). Go to this modifier and look at the Guide Width parameter. This parameter is responsible for the thickness of the guides in the viewport.
0:44 - Okay, let's brush the hair a little bit to make it look nicer and easier to adjust the highlights.
1:03 - Go to HairFromGuides and enable 100% hair in the viewport. Be careful - you need a powerful video card for this - if you have a lot of them. For example, my 1030 couldn't handle 200K hair. But at the same time 2080Ti and then 3080 - that pulls a lot.
1:09 - Now our task is to set up nice shadows and highlights. To do this, go to Viewport Settings and turn on High Quality, or press Shift+F3
1:17 - Next, go to Active Viewport Settings. Be careful here. If you have a weak video card, it will cry.
1:22 - First, we need to set the quality to maximum to make everything look nice.
1:26 - Second, we need to adjust the Ambient Occlusion Radius.
1:37 - In the material, it's enough to choose Basic Material - believe me, it's not a PBR object, so you don't need any fancy material that's going to load your video card.
1:40 - You don't need transparency either.
1:42 - If things are slowing down, you can add even more simplified material in the Material Override settings.
1:55 - Now go to the Ornatrix viewport settings and do as I show. You can read about all the settings in the documentation. Don't be lazy and go there because sometimes the name changes or the position of the buttons changes.
2:05 - Because the 3ds MAx viewport is not as sophisticated as Maya, there is a nuance. When you rotate your object - you have to click on an empty space or on modifiers to re-render the view.
2:11 - One last thing to do for all the beauty is to adjust the glare material. It used to work in 3ds max with its own Ox Hair shader, but now you can see that something has changed and I'm using a different material with an anisotropic effect.
2:17 - You need to select Scanline Render for this. This is a temporary selection. Then when you render the hair, you can choose the right one.
2:21 - Next we create a scanline default material.
2:27 - Shader Basic Parameters - choose Anisotropic.
2:38 - Assign the material to our furball.
2:43 - Let's start customizing.
3:42 - Now hair with shine.
3:36 - Don't forget that when you rotate, the rendering gets a bit off, so you have to click on the modifiers.
4:04 - Done.
