...out of these my heart's own song I'll make - a mixed media canvas
18A process video showing me create a mixed media assemblage using metal embellishments, vintage finds and different mediums. I'm using a wooden block as my base.
I start by sealing the wooden base using a matte gel medium. This is to allow me more time with the mediums and a possibility to erase them as they don't get immediately absorbed into the wood. On top I then make a raised layer using tinted modeling paste and stencils. After that I start to build the composition using thick gel medium as my adhesive. I choose various elements for the composition, but use a doily as the base and a heart-shaped locked and an old spoon as the main elements. After letting the composition dry, I then add colors on top. I start by adding some acrylics, then move to colored dye crystals and finish with liquid acrylic. After these layers have dried I add some dry-brushing and splashes to the piece and finish it with some pearls and a bow of natural twine.
The name of the piece and the video is a quote from a poem by Eino Leino, a Finnish poet. The poem is titled "Nocturne" and describes nature elements like the scent of linnea borealis, darkness of the woods, and shadows of the lakes of which the speaker makes their hearts own song.
