This bug seems to happen when you are in a Skirmish aka joining a game when not enough people have joined on the Free For All Deathmatch mode.

If the map is either Hollywood or Eichenwalde, you can select a hero as normal, but you fall through the floor and die as soon you do so.
Chateau Guillard is the only map that doesn't have this particular issue, instead you can't even select a hero to play as.
