Returning to play more maps by Sock, I ended up encountering Castle Kaahoo, which itself was based around the Heretic II textures used in a much earlier map by Vondur. Both are respectable Quake mappers; why not play both?

00:00 - Castle Kaahoo (2014)

This is supposedly a speedmap... but you might have a hard time guessing that, given how polished it feels. The level encompasses a set of rites to endure, with a few traps here and there to be wary of and potentially use to your advantage. The map manages to interconnect in a few neat ways, making some decent reuse of its relatively small layout.

36:32 - The Castle of Koohoo (2001)

I tried to keep my expectations in check given that I'd be jumping 13 years backwards to play this map after Kaahoo, but this map holds up surprisingly well. The architectural patterns are pretty simple, but it works really well with these textures. The round room where you surface into from the underwater tunnel is a particularly remarkable moment. The one thing that bothered me the most was the poorly-lit outdoor area with the extremely slowly moving platform (maybe form a bridge if it's going to be that long of a wait otherwise).
