After adoring the original Parasite Eve 1 on PS1, I get to try my hand at its horror sequel, Parasite Eve 2! Parasite Eve II (パラサイト・イヴ2, Parasaito Ibu Tsū). With returning star Aya Brea now part of M.I.S.T, we're set for another adventure. Parasite Eve 1 was groundbreaking in its style of gameplay, with a mix of live combat with RPG elements. This sequel keeps the RPG style, but now reduced to a stronger focus on Survival Horror gameplay. The game is still strongly bathe in its original roots, but its for certain a different style of horror rpg gaming. As a survival horror fan, i'm not too upset, though as good as Parasite Eve 2 could be, the changes mean its originality is replaced with more known gameplay of the PS1 era it released.

However, Parasite Eve 2 goes fully in with making you know you're playing a polished classic in its own right. Fun combat, thought out puzzles, level design keeping you interested in exploring, art design catching the eye at every turn, and a story keeping the characters front and center. The Playstation One was hitting its peak when Parasite Eve 2 released, so Squaresoft went all in on this title to capture gamers attention.

Survival Horror is the genre of my heart, with leveling characters and growing into a powerhouse close by. Parasite Eve 2 allowing me to have both makes this series must play. I find myself, no matter how badly damaged, or low on ammo I am, searching for more creatures to wipe out in order to gain that tasty EXP and unlock more abilities. Parasite Eve 2 makes you work for it, too. Enemies can appear in large numbers, in tight corridors, attack with quickness, and most take many clips of bullets before they're defeated. So, choosing to stay and battle is a choice between EXP and loss of resources and risk of death. There's also armour and buffs to be found and bought. Increasing HP, MP points, curing status aliments, and increasing overall defense play a large role. I would love to see it taking to a deeper level. Yes, here's where I long for a little return to the style of the original Parasite Eve game, the RPG aspect being reduced can be missed, but what remains keeps the game different from other horror games of its time.

Bosses in Parasite Eve 2 can be pretty difficult, too. Like the enemies, they eat ammo, but that's not the only way they can be fought. The locations may give some support in Aya's favour, or the boss, if you mess up and get yourself caught in the middle of a bad situation. The bosses can range from weird nut jobs, to large monsters set on eating flesh. Now with a redesign that makes them more horrible looking than ever, it's hard to not fear them getting their hands on you.

I miss Daniel, Aya's partner from Parasite Eve 1. Now that Aye has moved to Los Angelus, their partnership seems to have ended. Aya drops his name once or twice, which is heartwarming giving that I feared he'd have been forgotten by the developers over at Squaresoft. Along with the Parasite Eve series, I dream of Daniel returning to fight by Aya's side once more.

Though, Parasite Eve 2 introduces some new characters, such as Rupert, our new partner of sorts. Not so much as friendly as Daniel, but a good guy that aids Aya when needed.

Parasite Eve 2's soundtrack is pretty good, even has a few songs from the original games OST carry over. I like that. It keeps games, and all entertainment sequels connected. The new tracks are good, too. They set the tone well, creating a nice energy to the missions Aya is sent on, and making the battles, exploration, and menu sorting a more complete experience.

The gameplay also uses tank controls, which are natural for me, so no complaints. After a few minutes warming up to Parasite Eve 2's new style of combat, I found myself having a great time. I am a strong supporter of tank controls in certain genres, and fixed camera angled horror games is where they fit best. I disagree with any critics and fans they suggested Parasite Eve 2 is outdated in play.

From Wiki: Unlike Parasite Eve, there is no Active Time Bar that governs the order of actions during a battle. Battles take place in real time, so the player is free to act as they see fit. Another contrast is the absence of the 'range dome' seen in the first game, allowing the player to shoot at off-screen targets and engage targets from a safe distance. There are also no random battles; enemies will be found wandering in plain view, hence allowing the player to avoid confrontations and plan strategies. Aiming, as with most other games of this genre, is accomplished by cycling through the various 'lockable' targets within Aya's range.
