A long time ago I played the first game in the Sailor Moon Sega Genesis / SNES era and had a fun little time, but this sequel; Sailor Moon R, taking place during the anime's second season, beat me bad. In the time where Beat 'Em Up's reigned King, Sailor Moon R is a janky mess made with little budget and effort, a true anime tie in aimed at taking money from fans off brand name alone. Harsh, but those are my feelings. Still, I am a Sailor Moon fan, having grown up watching the anime in English, German (no subs) and Japanese. Rewatching Sailor Moon's anime was the first thing I did on YouTube when I first discovered this website in 2007. Strong memories are connected to this beautiful show. So, despite this game being rather poor and barely playable, I had a blast recording it on Twitch alongside my fun community that spent every minute joking and laughing alongside me. The game its self wasn't good, but the time spent playing Sailor Moon R was flawless. Some footage such as the battle mode and playing as Chibiusa didn't make this video due to time and pacing, but joys were had at the expense of this flawed title.
Sailor Moon's anime is must watch for every anime fan that likes light hearted characters with a dose of heavier, more serious story telling. It has great character development, amazing art direction, unforgettable music, and a conclusion worthy of its 5 seasons. Not many anime manages to tell its entire manga run, making Sailor Moon even more impressive. Shame about the transformation time sinks and terribly cheap animation as the series progressed, but it should still be on your list of shows to catch up on. More so if you're like me and love 80s-90s cel animation.
Sadly, one of the bigger upsets of Sailor Moon R's video game is the background art and music don't represent the shows iconic look at all. The backgrounds lack the beautiful, lively waterpainted colours and atmosphere, and the music, as far as I can tell, isn't from the series. Though, this game does have some nice tracks on a few stages. The backgrounds however, unforgivable. Instead of being in the streets of Tokyo you find stages that have you facing a random festival, and while you do get to see some of the Tokyo skyline in the second stage, you're next placed in a weird world of giant mushrooms and gnomes before being sent to a swamp as you ride a raft. It's terrible. You do visit the Crystal Kingdom, but the weirdness of the past stages hold on too strongly to not be disappointed with the art direction.
Enemy count is also wild. It appears the games enemy encounter number was meant for two player mode, as single player you'll find yourself fighting massive hordes of monsters (all based of Sailor Moon R's anime, cool). This makes the game harder, which isn't much of an issue, but it also makes the game feel poorly paced and drawn out when you're playing solo and having to battle heavy scores of bad guys before being allowed to move forward a few feet. The bosses are also cruel. They attack on wake ups after your character has been knocked down, often spamming Sailor Moon and friends to death, costing a continue and risking game over. It feels like the game was rushed out with little passion involved.
However, if you're a Sailor Moon fan and you have access to an emulator in today's world, than I would suggest you take an hour out of your day to play Sailor Moon R and find yourself some laughs and frustration as you get beaten down by monsters and find you've no real combos to save you. Or play two player with a friend and find even great fun, beat the game and laugh about the struggles you went through. Sailor Moon R isn't the quality fans deserve, but you can still find enjoyment with the right mindset and go in knowing it's not a well made game, but a potentially fun day.
