9If you're interested in a new or used car, you've probably run across an option dubbed "park assist" or "parking assist." Our latest video is an overview of how these systems work, and what to look for as you consider purchasing a new car with this feature.
The most basic systems are also the most common, covering the rear of the car and sounding an alarm as you approach an object. Some systems also cover the front of a car. More advanced systems show an image of the car in a central display -- typically using cameras to help give you an idea of just how close to an object you really are.
Some automakers offer different takes on the backup camera: generally either a multi-angle view or a 360-degree camera that gives you a top-down vantage point over your vehicle.
A few automakers even offer an especially advanced parking assist feature that can help guide the vehicle into a parking spot. Sometimes called "active park assist" or "auto park," these systems actually park the vehicle for you in a parallel or perpendicular parking space.
