Playing Parkitect feels like taking a step back to a simpler time, when Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2 dominated the theme park building genre and it’s instantly clear that it draws its inspiration from the classics, from the layout of the UI to the design of some of the rides, but it also introduces some much needed modernization and plenty of new goodies of its own, plus it’s the only game like this I know of that let’s you build a park together with a total of 8 players in online multiplayer.

It’s an incredibly good looking game that absolutely nails the most important elements of a game like this, with a clean, user friendly interface where both fans of the old tycoon games and brand new players will immediately feel at home finding their way around, even if you decide to skip the tutorial.

As you might expect with a game like this, the replayability is pretty much endless and basically only limited by your imagination. There’s 26 campaign scenarios to play through as well as sandbox modes either with or without having to worry about things like researching new rides and earning money.

The maps range in size from pretty big to “oh my god what am I going to do with all this space”, and by using the terrain editing and painting tools you’re able to easily make it look exactly like you want it.

There’s absolutely loads of pre-built rides, from relaxing merry-go-rounds and bumper cars, to huge nausea inducing spinning monstrosities, and pretty much every type of roller coaster you can imagine, with a couple of pre-built options for each of them.

They’ve made building your own custom coasters ridiculously easy too, without cheaping out on what you can do with them. If you feel like building 2 synchronised coasters side by side and spend time intricately intertwining their tracks then you can, or you can keep it simple with a few twists and turns combined with a steep drop here and there, and your guests will still get what they need to stay happy. Plus something I really appreciate is being able to see a little virtual blueprint of the train car going around the track AS you build it, so you can instantly see if it’s going to lose momentum or fly off the rails without having to back out of the editor panel to run a test.

In our gameplay showcase video I managed to quickly build a mine car train that weaved in and out of an active volcano without much effort at all, and by using a free camera mod you’re even able to ride on board your roller coasters, something which isn’t built in to the base game.

Speaking of mods, as if there weren’t already enough assets and rides to keep you busy for literally days, the game’s got Steam Workshop support where you can upload and download all kinds of stuff to get your park looking exactly as you want it.

Graphically speaking you play from an isometric view that lets you zoom in and out quite far both ways, and while on the surface it looks much more simple and gamey than something like Planet Coaster, it doesn’t skimp on the details. Everything’s vibrant and colourful, the trees look lush and everything’s really nicely animated which makes even the smallest of parks feel alive.

There’s stats for everything too, with a handy path overlay to highlight areas of your park where guests feel less happy than others, maybe because they can see a staff depot that isn’t blocked by hedges or decorated to fit in, or because of an excess of trash or vomit caused by a lack of janitors and so on.

Honestly Parkitect is a modern masterpiece, and even if I’d never played the old roller coaster tycoon games and was completely unaware of all the similarities between them, I’d still say that it’s easily able to stand on its own 2 feet as a thoroughly enjoyable and well made theme park builders, bursting with content and the kind of modding support that let’s a game like forever, and for the 24.99 euros they want for it on Steam, it’s hard to find a better deal in gaming.
