This is a review of Stellar Warfare, a space-based real time strategy game that’s been in early access on Steam since the 5th of august 2021.

It’s based around a tug of war, rush style gameplay where 2 players are placed fairly close opposite each other on a small but 3 dimensional map, meaning you can build and send your units up and down, as well as the usual forward, back, left and right seen in most other RTS games.

The way the build menu looks and how it works reminded me a lot of the old Command and Conquer games, and even some of the voice overs took me back to the days of Red Alert.

You start with a shipyard and can build other structures within a certain range of it. Most of the buildings are used to either generate the 2 main resources, metal and power, or for defence in the form of turrets to try and keep the ever growing stream of incoming enemies at bay.

If your shipyard is destroyed, it’s game over, so the goal is to protect your shipyard while continuously producing ships to overpower your opponent and destroy their base.

It supports online multiplayer, though there weren’t any players in the lobby whenever I checked, but there’s also singleplayer skirmish and wave defense modes with actually really difficult AI that’s pretty hard to beat even with the difficulty scaled all the way down.

Most of your time will be spent looking at the stream of friendly and enemy ships fighting it out over the center point, similar to a tug of war, and victory ultimately comes down to who can build a stronger economy and produce the most ships, as well as the right type of ship, to get the upper hand.

Away from the center of the map there’s asteroids and special buildings scattered around the outsides which can be captured to bring in extra income for your base.

You’re able to expand your base away from your main shipyard by using a special unit that comes with its own building zone around it so you can build refineries and defense outposts near new asteroids once your harvesters finish chewing through the ones closer to home.

They’re currently working on introducing a campaign mode too, but as of right now there’s only 2 missions available and for the most part they felt the same as skirmish mode, just with extra steps.

There’s 10 different ships to choose from in each match which you can customize in the fleet editor in the main menu. There’s no in-depth design options so you can’t change the shape or layout of the ships, but you can change the weapon loadouts and ship types you have available to you in-game to match your play style.

Ships are divided into corvettes, mediums and heavies, with corvettes being small, agile craft and heavies being more akin to battleships, but thanks to the fleet editor, there’s nothing stopping you making a heavily armoured heavy built to counter light ships, or a tiny little corvette that can stick some holes in something much larger.

Weapon damage is split between how effective it is at damaging small, medium and large targets, and the key to victory beyond outproducing your opponent is to build the right ships to counter whatever the enemy is throwing at you.

It’s a pretty simple concept and there’s still a lot of work to be done to add more content and re playability since after the first 2 or 3 matches it started to get a bit repetitive as the AI doesn’t seem to change its tactics and basically just throws units at you in a straight line until either side breaks, at least when he isn’t trying to sneak around the back of your base to steal a production building, dying to the same defense turrets again and again.

The graphics are pretty good and give off those epic space battle vibes with lasers and projectiles flying all over the place. The sounds on the other hand are pretty basic and everything sounds like it’s under water, but considering you wouldn’t hear anything at all in space, any sound at all is a bonus. The music’s nice though.

Basically if you enjoy rush-style games then you’ll probably like this, but if you’re looking for something with abit of depth to it, you might wanna keep it on your wishlist and wait for it to leave early access before you decide.

I hope you found this review helpful and if you did then consider checking out some of our other game reviews and subscribe to the channel to get our take on some of the other games you might have lurking in your wishlist.

Thanks for watching!
