Part 1 of 2 - Review and Criticism of the RCA Small Wonder EZ2050 Digital Handheld Camcorder

In this video I review and critique the RCA Small Wonder EZ2050 Digital Handheld Pocket Camcorder. This inexpensive entry level digital video camera is powered by either four AAA batteries or by mini-USB port. It supports SD and SDHC memory cards of up to 32 GB in size. It can capture 3 megapixel digital photos (interpolated from a 1 megapixel sensor), 1 megapixel digital photos, and the following modes and resolutions of video:
WebQ Quality - 320X240 - 3 minutes of video takes 82 megs of storage space
HQ Quality - 720X480 - 3 minutes of video takes 226 megs of storage space
HD Quality - 1280X720 - 3 minutes of video takes 368 megs of storage space
All three video capture modes are encoded using the Motion JPEG video codec at
30 Frames Per Second (FPS). The audio codec is PCM S16 LE ARAW that records in Mono at 48,000 Hz and 16 Bits Per Sample.
With the advantageous price point and these respectable stats, what could be the problem? Well, new Alkaline batteries last under 15 minutes in the unit; the unit requires an SD card to save video and the video capture process is HIGHLY unreliable; often crashing the unit either during or after recording...and did I mention that should the unit freeze, the video that you have just captured can not be recovered and is now but lost file fragments?
The RCA Small Wonder EZ2050 ONLY functions reliably when using SD cards that are UNDER 4 GB in size, so no SDHC cards. 2 GB sized SD cards and below will function as intended. However, when using the HIGHEST capacity SD card that works reliably in this device (2 GB) you can expect a maximum video capture time of 15:33 in HD mode (1280x720), 25:02 in HQ mode (720x480), and 1:09:19 in WebQ mode (320x240).
