This video needs a follow up! Placing panels north or south depending on the tilt of the sun still works reasonably well, but an update from the devs changes things a little bit.
Turns out there isn't a great single answer, but if you follow the rules I outline you'll increase your power output in most situations and get more electricity for your circuits with fewer solar panels.
