Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a CRPG based on the Pathfinder pen and paper franchise. Pathfinder itself, is essentially a fork of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. The CRPG had real-time with pause combat at launch. Recently a mod came out that converted the game to turn-based. Despite the fact that players have been asking for turn-based combat since before the game launched the developers ignored their customer base right up until the mod came out and was very popular. (imagine that) It single handedly restored interest in Pathfinder: Kingmaker. The developers decided they really wanted to get credit for this new interest in the game and so they finally caved and added turn-based combat into Pathfinder: Kingmaker. The patch adding this content is still in Beta and so there may be some bugs. The game launched about 2 years ago and despite being finished is still very much unpolished. The developers are still actively bug squashing but they are paying the price for a complete lack of any thing even resembling quality control before the launch. I've played many early access games with better fit and finish than Pathfinder has two years after launch. (Banners of Ruin is one such that I played and posted a video on just a couple of days before this series went up.) So expect bugs.

Pathfinder does support modding. We will not be using any mods on this save as I feel that the beta branch we are playing on is risky enough for recording purposes. We will be playing the Varnhold's Lot storyline mission which was added in as DLC and can tie into the main storyline campaign if you so wish. The basic premise is that we are part of a mercenary company that took the Swordlords up on their offer and carved out one of the three Baronies they were offering to support. Our primary character is an advisor to the Baron rather than the Baron himself. As such we have less control over the path of the story but hopefully don't have to deal with any of the realm control mechanics of the game (which i hated at launch but have subsequently been updated. i haven't had the energy to try them since then however.)

#turn-based, #pathfinder, #beta
