To me, this game's combat works better using keyboard & mouse and playing it as turn based and micro-managing all members of the party (in similar way to dungeons & dragons or baldur's gate). Trying to use gamepad and playing as real-time with pause (in similar way to neverwinter nights) is just too awkward and frustrating, as if it wasn't the game's primary design. I do have fond memories of playing the first game in the series and if I have the time I will revisit and stream a video of it.
