This is the fastest way I have found to gain xp and currency. Replay Savage's Lair over and over, try not to damage the boss and just continue killing his minions. Open the chest. Use health potions to keep your health topped up. Some weapons also get dropped during this method.

This is needed to even stand a chance during the final couple of castle levels and against the final boss.

The final boss level actually gives greater XP if you care to continue playing this game beyond trophies.
