PAX: AbleGamers Interview
Steve Spohn on how important gaming can be for people with disabilities.
AbleGamers is a foundation dedicated to working to promote better access to gaming for disabled people. We caught up with community outreach coordinator Steve Spohn to talk about their work at PAX East.
"One of our favourite stories being a StarCraft developer who we were talking to about colour blind mode and he sort of paused for a second and went "huh, that's weird I never thought about that and I'm colour blind myself..." so we were like what? It was pretty crazy."
Speaking of the guidelines document AbleGamers have published to help developers make their games more accessible.
"If you go through the practical set of accessibility guidelines and you pick and chose the ones that are the easiest to implement you can still get a large portion of those 33 million gamers [with disabilities]."
When asked if there was any developer or publisher who needed to shape up, Spohn had a swift response:
"We've had a lot of success with a lot of triple-A's except for Nintendo who really just have not been that interested in what we do, so here's to hoping that they listen..."
