249A playthrough of Ascii's 1985 arcade dodgeball game for the NES, Penguin-Kun Wars (ぺんぎんくんWARS).
I really loved Penguin Wars on the Game Boy, and it wasn't until sometime in the mid/late 90s that I found out that there was a Penguin Wars NES game. I was sooo excited. It was one of the first games I ever played when emulators were still a super-new thing. The internet becoming a big thing was seriously the best thing ever when it happened.
Penguin Wars was a port of the popular UPL arcade game of the same name, and it's one of types of old-school games that you could play over and over with it never getting boring. It's a combination of air hockey and dodgeball played by random animals that have been plagued by severe hydrocephalus.
The whole idea is to win by getting all of the balls onto your opponent's side of the table, and if time runs out, whoever has the fewest on their side wins. Of course, that would hardly be fun on its own, so you get to peg your opponent in the head with your balls, growing your score and your chances. Of winning. Nothing else. You can stun the baddie, and then, if you're quick enough, you can keep them frozen by drilling them again and again until they give. Get a perfect, and you'll see their dead eyes watering in utter humiliation and defeat. Because of their loss. Yup. No double entendres to see here.
The NES version was only ever released in Japan, but thankfully, everything except for the title screen is in English! The updated remake for the Game Boy, Penguin-kun Wars Vs., was released in the US as Penguin Wars and in Europe as King of the Zoo.

I've been pretty addicted to the new Penguin Wars remake/update/sequel(?) on the Nintendo Switch lately, so I thought that this would be fun to play and upload. If you like Penguin Wars, the Switch one is totally worth playing. And insanely neon and Japanese. It's awesome.
