In the late 90's, Mike Krahulik moved in with his best friend Jerry Holkins to play video games and make cartoons. After misfires like Chickenman and Clan Walrus, they created Penny Arcade featuring characters later named after their screen names, Tycho, a story-scrutinizing intellectual, and Gabe, a Pac-Man obsessed free-spirit. They pitched the comic to Next Generation Magazine, but were quickly shown the door.
They continued posting Penny Arcade online using server space from Efront and running banner ads. With three posts a week, they lampooned gaming news and continued to attract more views, but Efront was out of money and wouldn't pay them. Barely surviving on donations, Mike and Jerry thankfully met business analyst Robert Khoo, who learned they'd signed away book rights, nearly lost intellectual rights, and booked underpaying ad deals. Khoo worked two months free to right the ship.
Stabilized by ad and merchandise revenue, Mike and Jerry expanded, founding the Child's Play charity and starting the Penny Arcade Expo or PAX in 2004. Called PAX West, the convention now draws over 60,000 gamers and has expanded to PAX East, PAX South, and PAX Australia.
