Phantasmagoria (Saturn) Playthrough [English]
A playthrough of Outrigger's 1997 horror FMV adventure game for the Sega Saturn, Phantasm (ファンタズム / Fantazumu).
Phantasm was a Sega Saturn-exclusive console port of Sierra On-line's 1995 PC game Phantasmagoria (https://youtu.be/oAXC-MwfpHA ).
The Saturn version of the game was only ever released in Japanese, so in this video I am using a patch that strips out the Japanese dub and replaces it with the original English audio from the PC game. You can find more info on the patch at https://segaxtreme.net/resources/phantasmagoria-english-patch.126/
If you'd like to see the original Japanese Saturn game, you can find my video of it here: https://youtu.be/91H13ZW-UUc

The PC game is one of my all time favorites, and it was some seriously impressive stuff when it was new. It had a ridiculously huge budget, it pushed the boundaries for "adult content" in mainstream gaming, and it came on a staggering seven CD-ROMs to accommodate all of the animation and video.
The Saturn version does an exceptional job of bringing the game to the living room TV. Compromises clearly had to be made to compensate for the console's relative lack of memory and horsepower, but 99% of the original game is here, intact.
It is outright missing a couple of scenes due to censorship - some of the scenes showing the murders of Carno's wives have been axed - but the translation patch restores all of the scenes that were present in the Japanese game to their original, uncut form.
The look of the game is a bit rough, though. The resolution has been halved, the backdrop images are blurry and posterized, and despite shipping on eight discs (!), the FMV often exhibits nasty compression artifacts. You probably won't mind too much if you aren't familiar with the original game, but if you are, the difference in quality is pretty dramatic. Still, the game fares about as well as you'd expect for a port of this nature, and it provides a good approximation of a game designed to push hardware far more powerful than the Saturn's.
The translation patch is pretty cool, too. There are a few instances where short audio snippets play in Japanese (and occasionally French for whatever reason) and the disc change prompts aren't in English, but all the important stuff is and the game is totally playable.
