A playthrough of Capcom's 1990 license-based platformer for the NES, Disney's Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers was my jam when it first started in the late 80s on the Disney Channel. My sister and I watched it religiously, and it became an after-school favorite when it started playing back-to-back with TaleSpin and DuckTales as part of the Disney Afternoon block. Needless to say, we were stoked when we saw the anthropomorphic chipmunks show up on the cover of Nintendo Power sometime in mid-1990.

And the game didn’t disappoint. Chip 'n Dale is one of the most fondly remembered games of Capcom's Disney line-up, and rightfully so. It's a fantastic game.

It's a platformer that stays true to its source. The whole Rescue Rangers gang is here, as is Fat Cat and his army of robot dogs. In the single player game, you can play as either Chip or Dale, but the real highlight is the excellent two player mode in which you and a buddy can team up for one of the best co-op experiences on the NES.

The gameplay keeps things simple - picking things up and throwing them at your enemies is your sole means of attack - and the controls feel fluid and are quick to respond. The challenge was tuned perfectly for the game's target audience, and the levels all had their own unique gameplay elements that made them feel distinct from one another.

I also loved that you could bash your friend in the head with a crate to make them fall into a pit - so many battles erupted between my sister and I over how I'd purposefully stun her at the worst possible moments. Good times.

The graphics and sound are top notch and are on par with Capcom's best at the time, and the game's cheerful vibe makes it a real treat to play.

The new Rescue Rangers movie comes out next week so I figured it was about time to revisit this classic 8-bit game.

What do you guys think of it? Anyone else have fond memories of afternoons spent playing this one?

And if you're interested, I arranged the Zone B song for the Super Nintendo. You can check it out at https://youtu.be/LbCpukWqn1o
