What a game, man. Phantasy Star IV was close to RPG perfection, and 20 Years Past is JUST behind it. Very unique story and well written and fun characters. Some pretty hilarious scenes that reminded me of Slayers, one of my favorite anime nowadays, the graphics and cutscenes were very well made, felt very naturally like a true sequel to PSIV. And the music was outstanding, though one or two tracks kinda grated on me when they repeated tons of times.
To go into more detail, I definitely loved the characters, and the usage of some of the less useful characters in PSIV was great. Gryz was a pretty weak member in IV, but he was amazing here, both gameplay wise and story wise. Hahn was pretty much the same, and I mean, come on. That stache. As for the new ones, Emma was pretty decent as a protagonist, Asia was a complete dork that I loved, Jine was pretty good but I honestly don't have much to say about her, Wright was cool, and the villains were pretty good too. The amount of secret interactions was also pretty fun, encouraging exploration, but at the same time it did get kinda tiring with the amount you had to wander around to get all of them. Heck, I still missed quite a few.
There were some annoyances, but to be fair, pretty much every PS classic game had some annoying parts. It was funny how broken some techs/skills were, but at the same time I still felt pretty challenged and focused on every boss fight. It's a solid game and relatively short, though it still took me a few weeks of streams to finish it. But man, am I glad I did. Di.H did a FANTASTIC job creating a fan sequel that was very welcome, appreciated, and enjoyable. Sure, it's not as epic of a finale as PSIV, but really, it's like a small expansion, like those mini chapters after each PSO2 Episode. And for that, I give it a huge thumbs up. Only downside is, I want more.
