Phantom Blade Executioners: day 1 review
Review
Somewhere out there are some 30 year old gamers who used to play Dungeon Fighter Online, and who watched the Phantom Blade Zero trailer.
These are the people that made this game. They also probably played a ton of 2.5D flash games when they were teenagers.
If that describes you, this is a nice sidescrolling dungeon crawling action game that's fairly generous and straightforward to play.
I'm writing this after I burned through 1.5 characters worth of stamina and I have to go to work in about 5 hours. Also since this is just day 1 I can't guarantee anything I say here is totally accurate, but I think I've got the general idea down.
I'd suggest you read it all but I've split it into sections if you are curious about something specific
THE GAMEPLAY
You can play through the story on 4 different characters. Each character is going on their own adventure and they have their own voiceovers and different skills/playstyles. I picked Soul to start with but there is a second swordsman, a pink swordswoman, and a girl playing a harp.
You progress through 2.5D stages. You can fight enemies with a basic attack string and two skill combo strings. These skill combo strings are combinations of up to 6 skills that you can mix and match across different types of abilities; these skills are quite varied and I imagine are distinct for each character. Once you cast the last skill in a string, that combo string goes on cooldown. You also have a jump, a dodge roll, a parry, and an ultimate skill after you've done enough damage
The combat system is surprisingly fluid. You can weave basic attacks and skills from both combo strings together, cancel any skill with your dodge roll, and stun enemies if you parry at the right time.
Overall it's felt pretty fun even if it is straightforward
THE GACHA
The paid gacha is for phantoms. Phantoms are spirits of past martial artists who you are summoning to guide you when you use a skill. In other words, you equip a card to a skill to enhance its damage and give it some other properties.
The base gacha odds are 10% for an epic phantom and you are guaranteed an epic phantom if you do a 10 pull.
Rate-up banners will double the chance for an epic phantom to be one of the rate-ups; this appears to give you a 50% chance of pulling one of the rateups whenever you draw. Pity occurs at 80 draws; I don't know exactly how this works but with how generous the currency appears this looks pretty reliable to save up for. (You will see why later)
Gacha currency comes as tickets, or ingots. You need 180 ingots for 1 pull. Ingots can be obtained on a daily basis and also come from achievements, quests, events, or converted from premium currency, dragonseals. The game begins by giving you about 30 tickets and you can also acquire about 8000 ingots over the course of your first day so you can get a ton of pulls if you put in a few hours.
Gacha dupes are important for ascending your phantoms and improving their abilities. There are ways to do this without dupes but they don't look easy to come by (Thinkers and Hehehes).
THE GRIND
There are two main grinds from what I can tell: equipment grinding, and phantom enhancement.
Equipment have base levels (the required character level to equip it), tiers (the best being either epic (orange), set gear (green), or sin (red)). Equipment also has sockets, refinement levels, and equipment affixes can be rolled. In other words, pretty typical setup for an endgame grind.
Phantom enhancement is a whole nother beast. For the most part the most important enhancement is evolving a phantom, which is essentially leveling and ascending a phantom all the way until it has 6 orange flames, then feeding it a dupe to evolve it to 1 purple flame. Evolving most epic phantoms gives them new art, another powerful passive, and you can also activate additional set effects if you have enough purple flames across the set characters.
CONCLUSION
There is more content that I didn't get to touch yet. I haven't even hit level 60 which is, supposedly, when the true endgame begins. But for a day 1 review I hope this is sufficient to convince some of you guys who may have been looking for more info to give it a try.
