Bloomberg: Microsoft Begins Deep Job Cuts Across Xbox Division
Job cuts at King (10% of staff or about 200 jobs) and ZeniMax in Europe. US Units expected to be told later today on number of job cuts. Windows Central: Phil Spencer's message to staff. Phil Spencer in a memo sent to staff regarding upcoming layoffs.
"I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware and games roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we're seeing currently is based on tough decisions we've made previously. We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities.
We will protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential, while delivering on the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach means me can deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come."
The layoffs for the Xbox division are reported to be between 1,000-2,000 developers with the possibility of entire studios being shuttered. So far 200 developers from King and Zenimax Media have been let go. Microsoft is reportedly set to cut a total of 9,000 jobs across the entire company.
