In this video, Mahalo's Photoshop expert Justin Zagri shows how to add the Unsharp Mask filter to your images to help your characters better fit in.

Photoshop Tutorial - Unsharp Mask
---------------------------------------------------------------------

At this stage in the movie poster, the characters don't seem to fit the image very well. They lack the gritty details that we are all used to in movie posters. The characters look out of place and soft.

Luckily for us, Photoshop created a filter called Unsharp Mask. This feature will bring out details in an image that initially do not appear.

Open the Smart Object of one of your characters and choose one of the layer masks. Start with your character's face, because that is the most obvious and most important difference you will see.
Navigate to the top menu bar and click Filter -- Sharpen -- Unsharp Mask.

In the dialogue box, you can change the Amount of unsharpening to make the image more or less detailed. As you increase the Amount, the image will become more abstract.

The Radius also adds to the amount of detail in the image. It also makes changes that are dependent on the subject's skin tone. Generally, the higher the Radius, the more contrast the image will have.

The Threshold can be adjusted to either match the look of the original photo or add more detail.
To add the Unsharp Mask to the rest of your character's body, select the appropriate layer that contains the entire body and press Ctrl+F (Command+F for Mac) to automatically add the filter.
