Released in 1995, Injected is the second studio album from Phunk Junkeez, a Phoenix-based band that mashed up funk, punk, hip-hop, and alternative rock into a high-energy sound tailor-made for the mid-‘90s alt explosion. Raw, wild, and unapologetically rowdy, Injected pushed the band further into the national spotlight and earned them a cult following thanks to their chaotic live shows and genre-defying style.
The album’s standout track, “I Love It Loud”—a cover of the KISS classic—received heavy rotation on alternative radio and MTV, injecting their gritty brand of rap-rock with some crossover appeal. But Injected is more than just a cover album; it’s a full-throttle ride through thick basslines, distorted guitars, DJ scratches, and rapid-fire vocal trade-offs. Tracks like “Down Town” and “Movin’” reflect the band’s love for West Coast hip-hop and Beastie Boys-style call-and-response, while songs like “Million Rappers” and “Get Down” bring a punk rock intensity that reflects their skate-and-street roots.
Produced by Lee Popa (known for his work with Ministry and Living Colour), Injected has a gritty, live-in-the-room sound that captures the band’s off-the-rails energy. The record feels like a sweaty club show pressed to CD—loud, loose, and meant to move bodies.
While they never reached mainstream fame, Phunk Junkeez carved out a niche as early pioneers of the rap-rock hybrid, influencing the scene before it exploded with acts like Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach. Injected remains a time capsule of that pre-nu-metal moment when genre lines blurred, and anything that could get a pit moving was fair game.
