The Protagonist already has a history with Danny. Years ago, Danny was there when Our Hero and a friend were trapped in a car trunk and sent off a pier to drown. Did Danny help? No. He may have wanted to, but in the end he just watched them go down.
He's going to do more than watch today, though. Whether he wants to or not.
