''Piranha 3D'' is a horror movie that hit U.S. theaters on August 20, 2010. The movie is a remake of the 1978 film ''Piranha.'' In ''Pirhana 3D,'' a group of man-eating prehistoric fish, piranhas, are unleashed on the town of Lake Victoria at the height of the spring break vacation season. ''Piranha 3D'' is directed by Alexandre Aja of ''The Hills Have Eyes'' remake fame. It stars Jerry O'Connell, Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames and Richard Dreyfuss. Christopher Lloyd and Steve McQueen, the grandson of the late actor, also make cameo appearances.

Reviews for ''Piranha 3D'' were largely positive on Rotten Tomatoes, where the movie garnered an 85 percent rating on the website's "Tomatometer." Critic Kirk Honeycutt of ''The Hollywood Reporter'' called the film "A pitch-perfect, guilty-pleasure serving of late-summer schlock that handily nails the tongue-in-cheek spirit of the Roger Corman original." ''Variety'''s Peter Debruge said of ''Piranha 3D'': "The 32-year-old carnivorous fish franchise has lost none of its bite, serving up a fresh batch of spring-break revelers for the fearsome creatures to attack." Christy Lemire of the Associated Press calls ''Piranha 3D'' "awesomely gnarly" and "hugely entertaining." Not everyone was enamored of the film - it garnered a score of 61 on Metacritic. Roger Moore of the ''Orlando Sentinel'' was among ''Piraha 3D'''s detractors. Moore said of the movie "It's not as scary as it needs to be or as clever as it thinks it is, but the new 3D version of "Piranha" is at least as gimmicky as those fabled 3D films of yore."

Of the film's 3D effects, director Aja told MTV: "I understand why James Cameron in 'Avatar' didn't want to make the 3-D gimmicky, and he was right. But we are making a piranha-attacking-spring-break movie, so we are going to go for the huge on-the-screen effects and fish attacking the audience."

Bottom line: if you can handle what MTV describes as the "buckets of blood" and "tons of silicone," in the movie ''Piranha 3D'' might just be for you. Be warned, though, it's gory. How gory? "Ain't It Cool News" Harry Knowles says he's "relatively positive that this film used more blood than any film in film history."
