Pirates of Black Cove
No Booty without the Duty
1.Please tell the readers a little about yourself and your history to this point.
I studied Graphic Design in Hildesheim, Germany, from 2006 till 2009 and got my first job as freelancer for Settlers 7 shortly after I graduated. Then I worked full time in house at Realtime Worlds in Scotland for a couple of months and got back to Germany to work as freelancer again. That's what I'm doing to this day.
2. What tools do you use at your work? Software, hardware?
I'm working at a PC and Macbook Pro (depending on where I am ) and with a Intuos 3 A4 with Photoshop CS5.
3. How did you end up in the Pirates of Black Cove project?
I once applied for a freelance job at Nitro Games which was posted on the web some time ago. The job didn't happen, but I got into the freelancer pool and after some time the pirates came along and it was on!
4. What has been the most rewarding part on your work with the project?
It's really great to see how a game is forming up right in front of you. Every update I saw with the implemented art or ideas from me was very rewarding.
5. The most fun part?
The whole project was entirely fun. I very much like drawing caricature-like characters doing stupid, crazy or funny things and this game is actually full of this kind of stuff.
6. What about the most challenging one?
Due to the tight deadlines for assets and artworks it was challenging to keep up the creativity and quality. I haven't worked like this before, but it was a good experience.
7. Could you describe your usual workflow when coming up with imaginary illustrations for the game
I mostly came up with a rough scribble to communicate the idea, which I came up with myself for a brief description or a more precise description. Lasse Lehmusvaara, the art director, and me talked about it, he gave me some feedback. Then I either made another sketch or went on to rendering the final image.
8. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Who do you admire when it comes to art?
I love browsing artist's galleries on the internet. Most times randomly, just what comes across my way, but also art from specific artists for aspects like their way to compose images, the use of colors, designs, etc. There are many great artists to admire. Too many to name them all.
9. Do you play games yourself? What kind of games do you usually play?
Yeah I love playing games myself. Most times it's online multiplayer games I spent my time on together with friends. 1 or 2 hours in the evening shooting or fighting in team matches is what I do most. But every once in a while I also like to play a good story based game, but unfortunately there aren't many I am interested in.
10. What would be your strengths as an artist? What parts of your art would you like to improve next?
I see my strengths in characters and fine art, but I always try to keep up the rest as well. Right now I focus on improving my environmental and landscape skills.
11. What goals do you have for the future?
Oh, there are many, but the nearest goal is setting up a new nice little studio for myself , what I'm actually doing right now, where I want to dig deeper into new media and techniques.
12. Any advices you would like to give for those who want to make it as an artist in a gaming industry?
Hard work and trying to bring out your name in the scene. Then the chances are good to hit it big.
13. If you would be a character from the world of Pirates of Black Cove who would you be?
There are a few, but if I had to choose I would be the mad alchemist!
14. Anything you like to Add?
I hope the gamers out there will enjoy the Pirates of Black Cove and the art I created for it!
15. You want to tell us a little about the painting you're about to make for the viewers from the world of Pirates of Black Cove?
It's one of my favorite characters, the mad alchemist, sending out a message the . It's just the process of how I did most of the artworks for the game from idea to final image. I hope some people find it interesting or of any help if they are into art in any way.
