PixelJunk Shooter

PixleJunk "Shooter" was released in 2009 exclusively on the PlayStation Network and is an arcade style shooter, with puzzle elements. In Shooter the player or players control a small ship that represents a hired gun from a galactic corporation to discover the cause of an SOS from the mining colony on the planet Apoxus Prime. The game has highly stylized graphics that are typical of PixelJunk games. The story is a minor element of the game, but combined with the style of game this is all that is needed. There is no voice talent in the game, nor is any necessary. In Shooter the player flies a ship around that only has a weakness to heat (with some exceptions due to power ups). In this game the players' main goal is to pass through each level, with secondary goals of collecting all the diamonds and stranded miners in the level.

The game play of Shooter is very simplistic and fun. The player avoids hot lava while using water to cool it, turning it into soft ground. Soft ground can be destroyed to allow you to maneuver through the levels and find secrets. The player uses a grapple type apparatus to collect and use items in the game as well as rescue stranded miners. This game is so simple and straightforward in its design that it is hard to find any fault in it. It lets you know right away the type of game it is, and the difficulty level progresses by adding new factors into the game, such as explosive gases and magnetic liquids. This keeps things fresh. The bosses and other enemies are fun as well. It is fun to play alone or with someone co-operatively and there is a fair amount of replay value to the game. For people who are trophy hunters this is a relatively easy game on which to earn one hundred percent. My biggest complaint about the game was how short it was even after I put in the effort to earn all the trophies. The game ends in a cliffhanger and its sequel is now available. I liked the game and give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. I would recommend spending the $9.99 to purchase the game and I think that any player would enjoy the time they spent on this gem of a game.
