Stacking Review

Stacking was released in February of 2011 on the PlayStation Network and Xbox live Arcade. This game was produced by Double Fine Productions, the makers of Brutal Legend, and Costume Quest. In "Stacking" the player controls Charlie Blackmore, the smallest in a family of stacking Russian matryoshka dolls who is on a quest to save his older siblings from indentured servitude. This game is an adventure game that uses the concept that the smallest stacking doll gains the abilities of the stacking doll that he is nesting in. Charlie is the smallest doll which means that initially his only special ability is to stack into other dolls.

This game is among the most creative concepts that I have seen in a game. The stacking of the main character to gain new abilities and solve puzzles a very clever idea. The game is oddly addicting. Even though it is not the most exciting or well-paced game that I have played, it still managed to pull me into its world. The story telling style matches that of a silent film with piano music and story screens placed up between scenes. This helps to set the atmosphere of the game as well as being another creative feature. Stacking is well polished with no major glitches that I could observe. The games' largest fault is that it lacks excitement. There is no feeling of being rushed or any sense of impeding threat in the game. It is kind of on the boring side. The most entertaining portion of the game is the final boss which is a variation on the "Rock Paper Scissors" game. This game deserves top marks for creativity, polish and concept. However, because it is lacking in a strong fun factor I am only giving it 3 out of 5 stars. I would recommend purchasing this game if it were on sale or if the gamer wants to try out a creative game with a unique concept.
