When NPCs die, you can either "activate" (sounds better then "use"^^) their corpse, or if they had any posessions they will leave a grey sphere behind which can be lootet.

This will allow you to fetch their ashes which can then be put "under ground", meaning any dirt you build over a placed ash-box will result in them being buried and a holographic tombstone will appear!

In the beginning of the game only 3 people died, but they will get more, which I actually "liked" as a gameplay mechanic, because it makes you squirm a little, loosing people for which you cared for in your base!
It's only a small emotional connection, but it's enough to have some impact, so kudos for the devs for thinking of that!
