In this video lecture and discussion from my Spring 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we continue our study of the Phaedo, concentrating now of the arguments made for and against the immortality of the soul in that dialogue. Before examining the arguments, we look at the nature and purpose of argument, and discuss the process of dialectic, as Plato understood it. As we discuss the arguments, we also touch on the Platonic doctrine of recollection and the doctrine of forms, and look at Plato's conception of the metaphysics of change.
A handout is available covering some of the arguments: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5WCol_6kJjFLW53MjJNdjdpLWc/edit?usp=sharing
